it a new life as a handy house moving box .

Question:

Is there an easier way (apart from nicking the one from across the road where the house is empty) to get one?

Answer:

I had great difficulty obtaining a South Cambs green box, despite many phonecalls. In the end, I got one by waiting around for the bin men to do their green-box collection, and just asked them for one. They had several spares in their truck, and happily gave me a couple You don't have to put stuff in the green box to get it collected. We have put newspapers out in carrier bags and bottles in the boxes they came in
(wine and beer) and they still get collected..... After the recyclers failed to return our green box we put out the usual contents in a cardboard box with a large polite note asking if we could have our box back. Problem solved. Assuming you're in the Cambrigde City area (and hence should have a black box, not a green box) and you don't mind paying the £3 charge for a replacement, just go to the council depot off Mill Road (on the little cul-de-sac on the left just before the bridge as you go out of town) and ask at reception. They'll provide you with one there and then (in exchange for £3 fee). Given your house has already been supplied with a free black box, you'll probably be lucky to get a replacement without paying the fee. If it works anything like it does with wheelie bins, then that's not enough to get a free replacement. Essentially it's not in the council's budget to replace stolen/misappropriated bins; supplying free bins was a one-off when the wheelie bin scheme was first introduced, but now replacements are chargeable... I suspect that it works much the same for black boxes...
