what when expedite the shipping, and moved to the bottom of the queue.
Question:
I ordered my Quad PowerMac from Amazon a few weeks ago. When I checked online, I was given a ship date of about November 11. I had originally checked 'ground shipping' which means it might have arrived as late as November 22. Since I have a project I'd like to do before then, I went back to their site to change the order to '2nd day shipping'. There was no warning that this would change my place in line. After changing the order, I checked the anticipated delivery date - and it's now December 5. Apparently, when you expedite the shipping, they move you to the bottom of the queue. What in insanely stupid procedure. Why should expediting the shipping dump you to the bottom of the list? When you contact their people by email, they don't seem to care that it doesn't make sense to charge someone extra for 2nd day shipping - and then have the product arrive a week later. They say that there's nothing they can do. And, of course, there's no phone number to call to try to talk to a person directly.
Answer:
_This is what happens when you try to go the cheap route. You thought
you were saving a couple of bucks, but in the end you got bent over.
Too bad you weren't smart enough like the rest of us, to get you
PowerMac right from www.apple.com.
_I just ordered my G5 Quad Yesterday on Nov 10 at (roughly) 3:45 PST via the
Canadian Apple Store and I was told also that it would be shipping by Dec
5th.
I also had requested expedited shipping.
However, I don't have a problem with this shipping date as...
1. I never increased the ram on the Quad, it's stock 512mb. I'd rather get
it from a local vendor at cheaper rates. This delay buys me plenty time to
shop around for the best prices. Should the Quad arrive before I have
bought my ram, I'm not even going to bother opening the box the Quad
arrives in until I do. I'm looking for at least 8gb. 1 gig in each slot.
This is the best computer I have ever bought in my life, I want to do this
right.
2. I'm still considering a monitor for it, I'm currently between either a
30" inch Cinema Display or two 23" cinema displays, or perhaps even two 20"
...or perhaps something else from another vendor. I haven't settled on it
yet. Again, this delay buys me time.
3. Dec 5th is IMHO a rough guess on Apple's part, it might (emphasis on
"might") ship earlier. I've never ordered anything from the Apple store
before other than Quickitme so I really don't know.
4. The Quad is without a doubt the hotest offering in Apple's entire
lineup....EVER! Without doubt. Read the forums, EVERYONE is talking about
the Quad. This might be the most desired Mac Apple has ever made. Why, If I
may say so, this may be the single most desired computer on the planet, at
the moment. That is sure to put a strain on the available stock & supply
Apple has on hand. Which is to be expected and probably a very good thing
for Apple in the long run.
5. A Dec 5th shipping date means it arrives well before Christmas, and
that's OK by me. Besides I don't want to rush Apple, let them ship it when
they are ready. I'm sure they test and stuff before shipping anyway, let em
test, It's all good.
6. The reason I ordered yesterday and not on the following Monday as I had
planned is some people (The ones that ordered the earliest) have already
received thier Quads and are posting benchmarks on forum sites already. I
figured this would encourage more orders and bump me further down the list.
I think those that promptly ordered when the Quad was announced already did
to some extent. Fair enough.
7. Both Apple stores in America and Canada clearly state that the Quad
takes two to three weeks before shipping and that's an estimate, which
depends on available stock and thier supply chain and total volume of
customers and orders. I knew what I was getting into when I ordered.
8. I will own this computer for my lifetime. What really is two or three
weeks?
_The snag is it's a seller's market and Amazon won't give a stuff, but
1) cancel your Amazon order and re-order from Apple.
2) take the $200 - shipping hit to send a message to these bureaucratic
morons.
It sounds a wonderful machine, but I'll wait for the Intel version.
_It's not *that* bad. You can buy a dual 2 GHz G5 for $1500 off of
eBay now (new, in box). Two years ago, that was a $3000 machine. Figure
it loses $2/day. So, a 5 minute bathroom break costs less than a penny.
