cheap moving boxes?
Question:
Does anybody know where I can get cheap moving boxes? Movers don't generally like grocery store boxes, so I was wondering if anyone knew where I can get cheap moving boxes.New moving boxes from U-Haul are quite expensive. Any suggestions for sources of discounted or maybe once-used moving boxes? (I don't want to use misc-sized boxes from grocery stores and such, though.) Many thanks,
Answer:
Drive through any large apartment project on the second or third day of the month, but before the trash/recycling pickup. Odds are you will find at least 1-2 dumpsters overflowing with near-pristine moving boxes, and probably even stacks of the blank newsprint to wrap dishes in. If you can't wait that long, just cruise the projects till you see a u-haul or moving truck, and offer the person a twenty and/or assitance with carrying the heavy stuff, if you can have the boxes. If your area doesn't have curbside recycling, stake out a dropoff site, and help people unload their cars. I almost never get desperate enough to pay for boxes. Takes a little forethought, but they can almost always be found for free. Look under "Packaging Materials" in your yellow pages, or do a Google search specifying your locality. Many commercial packaging places will sell to the general public. I did this when we moved last year, and I was able to buy ~25 largish boxes for about $1.50 (Canadian) each, along with a bunch of blank newsprint. Used the boxes for bedding, clothing, and other lightweight things. But mostly I used liquor store boxes. They are a good size for dishes and other heavy stuff. That, and commercial corrigated box distributors, were good answers to OP, who said he doesn't want to scrounge up odd boxes. I did that 20 or 25 years ago, and I don't want to do that now, either. Why is it so hard for the scroungers to get it through their heads that some of us are *not* asking for FREE boxes (we KNOW where to get those) but about only about more reasonably priced ones. I would prefer going to one place during their business hours, and being able to buy a selected quantity of brand new boxes of sizes to fit my needs, supplied bundled flat so that I could put 50 or 100 in the car in one trip, provided the price was something I found reasonable; than the alternative of showing up in various stores on various days, competing with other scroungers, and having to take whatever qty was available used ones in sizes that just happen to be there. Back when I was scrounging boxes, I never got all the ones I wanted in one trip, it was a few here, a few there. If *you* want to scrounge free boxes, go ahead, just don't try to get me and OP to do it, that is NOT what was asked. I asked the original poster why they didn't want boxes from grocery stores. They stated the reason was that they didn't want the odd sizes and that the boxes were usually torn or cut open. The other reasons were ones you added and they're *your* reasons. But you weren't the original poster. I go to the produce department of the grocery store. That's different from the grocery department of the grocery store. I've basically only ever gotten two sizes there in the produce department. And they aren't torn or cut up because the clerks don't use box cutters to open them. The boxes have nice tops that lift right off. I also find that because this gives the boxes "double sides", it gives what's inside the box a little more protection. So, based on the objections of the original poster, I just thought trying the produce department might be a reasonable option.
