Cheap movers

Question:

Got a friend who needs to move a family of 4 (his daughter, husband, two babies) from Washington State to Huntsville. - anyone know the cheapest possible way to do this? Needs suggestions for Movers/Uhaul/ Whatever works. They have a small 2-bdrm apt. of stuff to move. cheap as possible....

Answer:

First, sell, give away, or discard the junk, don't haul it. This includes cheap furniture. Check with U-haul to find out where the biggest demand for returns is nearby and where they are overstocked in Washington. For example, you might find that they could save $500 by returning a truck to Atlanta instead of Huntsville. Years ago, I could haul a trailer away from Houston almost for free. (As I recall, it was $28 for a 5' x 8' trailer from Houston to Huntsville versus about $250 from Huntsville to Houston! Huntsville was starved and Houston was overloaded.) From your description, they can get by with just a trailer and save a boatload of cash. But, since they have to hop several ranges, they'd better have a REALLY good tow vehicle and make damned sure that the tounge brake works. Consider that a tow dolly behind a truck will cost almost as much as a trailer. I'd do a dry run to verify exactly what would fit into different sized trailers. If they would sell their car there, then they should consider one of the small, economical van-trucks.
From everything I have heard from folks and know personally, they are about the best movers going but not that cheap.
