Good tip, and just to expand on this idea, call ahead and usually you can get them to save a supply of boxes for you and let you know what day to come pick them up. Most stores don't save the boxes unless they have a request for them. Liquor boxes are especially good because they often have extra sheets of cardboard or dividers in the box that can be used to organize and pack your possessions while also helping to prevent breakage. these boxes are also often much cleaner than boxes from other locations. Many cities have businesses that sell used boxes--loook in the phone bood or its electronic equivalent. They run about 30 to 50 cents, instead of several dollars. Not as good as free, but you may be able to get the sizes that are appropriate for moving, such as wardrobe, etc.
