Moving Koi-hiring a pond supply company?

Question:

I just found this website and apologize if this question was recently asked. We are moving in a few weeks and have a friend with a pond who will take our two large koi. Has anyone moved koi themselves? What did you use to remove them from the pond and transport them? Would you recommend we hire a pond supply company instead? Any advice regarding your experiences would be most helpful.

Answer:

_Corral one at a time to a corner with a large net then, without removing the guy from the water, slip him into a large, heavy- duty plastic bag (20 gl bag). Or you could just get in there with the bag and bag the fishies that way. The net part is the worst part, and you should use a shallow net if you do use a net. A good 'net' would be no net at all, but just the rim (of a net) with a bag (clear, H-D plastic) attached. Best time might be at night, when they're sleeping. I know that's about the only way I can grab my goldfish that dude's a rocket!
_That is how I started with Koi...I had 6 given to me for removing them from the pond. Large nets and 2 - 55 gallon drums of food grade plastic. Waste of money I suspect. We moved these fish over an hour's drive from their old home to the new pond, and they did fine. They did jump a lot, so we had the tops covered with netting to keep them from jumping out. You should move them yourself....koi are rather hardy fish, and won't suffer. 'Course, they might be unhappy for a few days..
_Yes, try to keep them in water as much as possible. If they are large Koi, they can 'roll' in the nets. Shallow nets are used so the Koi are well supported and don't 'bend'. If they roll they can damage their fins. I happen to have one that had a fin damaged before I got it.
