Question:
Anyone in this group have experience with renting a moving truck for a one-way move? I've gotten quotes from three different places, anywhere from $1,050 to $1,900 for 15-foot trucks. The lowest quote was about double than what I was hoping to pay. Is there any way to cut the cost of the rental, coupons maybe? Would renting a regular pickup truck and a trailer be a cheaper but still viable option?
Answer:
Sounds about right. I paid Ryder $150 two years ago for a 300 mile move and that was the lowest quote (highest was about $300). BTW, post office has Ryder coupon in their moving guide. Since your move is over 2,000 miles long, the price of a $1,000 is right. You'll need to contact some rental agencies to do a comparison since this probably depends on where you'll be renting the equipment and where you intend to drop it off. The only specific suggestion I can offer you is to stay away from U-Haul. They have a reputation for shoddy customer service and poorly maintained equipment. The prices you quote are typical. Don't hesitate to play the different truck companies against each other by telling them what the other one is quoting; there is at least *some* give in the price they first quote you. The amount of give depends on whether you're renting during a peak period (end of month, beginning of school year, or the summer) or during a slow period (wintertime, early spring). If you can push the move off until the winter (I know, that's a big *if*) you may end up saving 50% One-way rental is a very expensive option. Portland is a popular destination, but not a popular starting point for rental trucks. You might find it cheaper to return the truck yourself, and fly back to Portland on a discount ticket.
