Question:

Anyone have any good/bad info on the Mebane area? I'm moving from Hickory to the triangle area, will be working for a medical testing company based in Burlington and may split time between their Burlington corp. office and their RTP datacenter. Hillsborough was considered until I found out my RTP committment may be two months or less, so I'm looking at Mebane for the first solution/first year of living while I learn the area. Particularly, the Fieldstone apartments in Mebane near exit 153. Anyone have pro/con opinions of the area, etc? I would really appreciate some opinions as I'm learning the area as I go. I wanted some close-by self-storage too but it's not really an option. I have motorized toys I keep in a bay (2 cycles, 2 jetskis).

Answer:

More toward Burlington from Efland which is just on the other (West of) side of Hillsborough. Mebane is a great little town. I've lived in Mebane for 7 years, and lived near Mebane all my life. The Fieldstone Apartments are pretty new--there's a brand new bunch of apartments going up just behind the Hampton Inn, as well. There's a self-storage place on Jim Minor Road, not too far off NC-119. I *think* it's called Sunrise Self Storage, but will check the next time I go by there. There are also a couple of self-storage facilities in downtown Mebane--one on 70, and one on Washington Street
(parallel to 70, but the other side of the railroad tracks). I've heard similar good things as already posted. But if you're planning on living there long term and like the small town atmosphere, I don't know how much longer that is going to last (as the new developments indicate). The dot com bust probably slowed things down some though. Elfland might hold out longer. And it's misnamed -- the residents look more like dwarves.
