Tax amount when moving household goods from Europe to the US ?
Question:
Question for the website: suppose you move from Europe to the States for some time, and do not want to leave your cellar behind you. How much would you pay in tax ? Would this be a % of the face value, a fixed price per bottle ?
Answer:
_the 20-second overview, which isn't anything remotely resembling legal advice:
Theoretically you can't do it at any price. The limit is about two and a half
cases and it has to accompany you. Practically you may be able to put it in
with your household goods without anyone noticing; enforcement is far from
airtight. However, you obviously run some risk of getting caught and hassled,
fined, in some states theoretically even jailed (highly unlikely in practice,
but it's there), or losing the wine. Safest of all is to try to find a good
wine shop with a license allowing importation in the place where you're moving
and sweet-talk them into helping you.
For more details, contact US Customs (which has a website). State regulation
of alcohol shipments is even more important, but there is some risk to
calling yourself to the attention of the local alcohol control board. You
might try www.winelaw.org for additional information.
_Here is where you can check. Since the importation is not for sale and
would be considered household goods I'm sure you could make a case the have
the collection considered as such.
