L.A. Toxic Waste Site or Coliseum vs Houston Retractable-Roof
Question:
Have you heard anything on the team name? Since BA is going with a new one in Tenn., will the new owners in Houston adopt the "Oilers" or go with a totally new name? are you trying to say Houston does not deserve a team? are you afraid of the competition? or is it knowing Houston will have a better stadium than Dallas? It sounds like you may be jealous of something!!!!! Why does Houston deserve an NFL team more than San Antonio? SA has the domed stadium, why not them?Houstonians had their team and let it go!! Remember the save the Oilers pep-rally and no one came?
Answer:
Houston's proposal calls for hotel and motel tax revenues to support $195
million in construction costs, with the balance generated by the stadium's
two main tenants -- McNair's team and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
The deal, which local officials call better than many NFL stadium packages,
should be good enough for Houston to attract an expansion team or entice an
existing franchise to move from a smaller market to the nation's
fourth-largest city.
Houston is responding to the loss of the Oilers, who moved to Tennessee two
years ago for a new stadium deal after local officials balked at building
one for owner Bud Adams.
No news on a potential new team name. Since, once a franchise
is granted, it'll be a few years before the team "gears up", I
expect the new owner, Bob McNair, will open it up for suggestions.
I don't expect there will be any sentiment for the Oilers as a team
name. Something along the lines of Houston's Astros / NASA /
space would be more appropriate (IMO). I've already suggested
the Houston Universe but, hey, it's early. Houston's got to get a
team first.
No flame war is desired. I am a Houston resident who is also a Cowboy fan.
I do, however feel that Houston does deserve a team. No I did not support
the Bud Adams owned oilers...the entire program was (is) a joke. The fans
got tired of being told by B.A. to build him a new stadium or he would move
his team, that coupled with the fact, that he was unable to field a quality
product on a consistent basis wore thin with the locals. Yes there are
still some die hard oilers fans out there. I have no concern over which
city is better, since Dallas and Houston are both in Texas, we have the
best of both. In the event that Houston does get a team, i will still be a
Cowboys fan, but will also support our local team. Bob McNair is considered
here as a class individual and has the support of the city, while Bud Adams
(is) was not considered as such, therefore could not garner the support.
I almost feel bad for Tennessee. They send us Davie Crockett and Jim Bowie
to fight at the Alamo and, we send them the Oilers...such a deal. I also do
not think that the oilers will even be considered as a team name in the
event that Houston is fortunate enough to land a franchise, Bud Adams owns
the copyright to that name, also, the name would bring back lots of
memories..some good...mostly bad though. I also agree that San Antonio
deserves a team. Texas is certainly big enough for three NFL teams, it
would create an interesting rivalry.
