Local moving company recommendations please

Question:

It's time to move and we want to hire a company for a local move. Does anyone care to make a recommendation for or against any of the local companies? We will need them to do the packing as well as the moving.

Answer:

I moved frequently in another life, but fortunately my employer paid for the moves. If it was me, I would check, first of all, with the "affiliated" movers -- those in the Yellow Pages who are affiliated with a chain of moving companies (Allied, North American, etc.) Then any of the movers whose ads bear a BBB logo. In case of problems you can get the BBB to assist in resolving them. Get at least three written estimates. If you decide on one of these, check with the BBB to see if they have any complaints, especially unresolved ones. (BBB will not recommend any company but will tell you what their records show.) Ask if the movers have any local clients you can contact for a reference...and do it. Be aware that having someone pack your stuff can be expensive, especially if you have a three bedroom house and lots of shelf stuff, books, clothing etc. Also, you will be amazed at how much of your furniture is "chipped", "rubbed", "scratched" and so on when the driver starts to make up the inventory sheet before loading. Also find out if the company wants to be paid on arrival at the destination and whether they accept charge cards or want a cheque.
