Moving to Athens - Need service Information

Question:

I am a US citizen and have been offered a 9 month employment contract in Athens. I would be operating as an independent contractor, not an employee. Before I decide whether or not to accept the contract, I am wondering if somebody can point me in the right direction to get some questions answered about a few things. If you don't know the answer to any of these questions, but know where I could find the answer, I would be very grateful if you would help me out!
1. What are the laws regarding independent contractors in Athens (or Greece), particularly as it relates to taxes?
2. Making approximately 42.000 euros/year, approximately how much should I plan on paying in taxes?
3. My wife and I have 3 children (5 of us total) - is healthcare available for families of independent contractors and, if so, who could I call to learn more? Approximately how much should I plan on paying for basic healthcare premiums?

Answer:

_You will probably have to register for VAT which is 18% of turnover in Greece. On top of that you will have to pay something like 33% corporation tax same as the rest of Europe if you make any profit plus income tax of at least 20% plus national health insurance of 11% or something like on you drawings since you will be self employed that which leaves you with about
55% of what you earn ie. ?23,000 . Its covered by your taxes.
_if you works as a self-employed contractor and has a certain turnover
(which would be the case with 42,000 euros/year), you're subject to national VAT. you must add it to the services invoiced to your customer, and in turn you can deduct from your fiscal debt the VAT paid on supplies & services bought by yours, so it is fiscally neutral for you (and for your customer), the final VAT being supported by the (private) end-user. As US Citizen, you should contact the American-Hellenic Chamber of Commerce. http://www.amcham.gr/ I think you will get much more specific and reliable information from there
