Need ideas for a "Moving box"
Question:
Some good friends of ours is moving soon from a house they've lived in for 10 years, and they're moving themselves. I'm trying to get together a gag gift for the move, things like Ben Gay, ibuprophen, heat packs, and maybe a few helpful things bubble wrap, strapping tape, and magic markers. They live in Wisconsin, so the box will either have to be mailed or go with us on a plane. What other things would be helpful for a move?
Answer:
_Get a set of cheap dishes at Wal-Mart, and pre-break them for the move.
Put the pieces back in the original box.
If they're moving themselves, one of those little wheeled carts would come
in mighty handy.
_Magic markers and color coded labels?
A bottle of champagne to celebrate their new home.
I used to know an old blessing where you gave new homeowners a shaker
of salt, a loaf of bread and a something else... anyone know the
blessing? It made a nice housewarming gift.
- (Most important) A stack of newsprint at least 8 inches
high. (For individually wrapping each cup, plate, and
glass in 2-3 thicknesses, before they place them ON EDGE
into a box.)
6-8 rolls of (usually brown) plastic strapping tape,
and a one-hand dispenser.
a reminder to mark the boxes with THE ROOM it came from
(kitchen, kid's bedroom, etc.) This is probably more
immediately important than marking the contents.
during our 23 moves, I can't tell you how many times
something like a box of kitchen utensils (marked "tools",
because it included a hammer and screwdriver) sits for
a month unopened in a garage or storage shed, while you
search everywhere for the spatulas...
_So far, besides the more humorous heat packs and ibuprophen, I've got:
multiple magic markers
color coded labels for different rooms
return address labels with the new address on them
post office change of address forms
strapping tape and a one-handed dispenser
bubble wrap
