Moving boxes needed

Question:

Does anyone know where one can get good size moving boxes? Like the one that the professionals use. Or if anyone has any they would like to get rid of. I live in Brooklyn, NY.

Answer:

They have VERY clean large boxes. They toss DAILY. Originally they contained paper goods such as coffee cups, napkins, stirs, etc... and they're very sturdy. I stationed myself near their dumpster and within a couple of days had 30 or 40 good size boxes. They were collapsing them, but not cutting them. If you stop in, I'm sure they'd save them for you. They charge a fortune for them, but the same places that rent moving trucks sell them. Or just hang around a cardboard recycling bin, and snag the clean ones as people drop them off. In my student days (a while ago ) I canvassed liquor and grocery stores for good, strong and FREE boxes. Also, some moving companies will provide free used boxes IF you're using their moving services. They will also SELL you new or used boxes if you're NOT using their services. Also, truck rental outfits (e.g. UHaul) and packing/shipping businesses will sell boxes but they're not cheap. You might also check with friends/family who have recently moved and may have saved the boxes. I always get my boxes from U-Haul. I have found that their rates are competitive with anybody else's, but their product is standardized nationwide so that if I'm now in Phoenix AZ rather than Wilmington NC I can still get boxes the same size as what I already have (makes it easier to pack the truck). But getting enough boxes at U-Haul to move a good-size house will cost you a couple hundred dollars. Of course, I haven't bought more than $50 worth of boxes during my past four moves because I save my boxes, and only discard the ones that are crushed enough that they can't be reused. Boxes flatten down nicely, and are easily stored in places like, e.g., under beds, that are not normally usable for storage because of the difficulty of access. (Unless you have one of those "captain's bed" things with the slide-out drawers). You can buy standard-size boxes by the bundle at any box manufacturer
(check your local Yellow Pages), but unless you need a *LOT* of boxes, that won't be cost-effective. Last time I moved I called the local swap radio show (Sunday morning, AM station) and asked for some moving boxes. Someone called within 10 minutes and I got a whole house worth of boxes. It was great. Do yourself a favor and buy new boxes. When you get and use grocery boxes you sometimes import the roaches with these food cartons. Not only will you bring them into your old house, you will transport them to the new house. Sometimes you can't even see them but the eggs are there.
