moving to seattle should it be?
Question:
I just have some plans of moving to seattle.Do any of you guys want to move there. Why or why not?
Answer:
_Portland's better.
Also, my mom told me when she got back from vacation there, that if
there were a big enough earthquake, the streets would be TWO STORIES
DEEP in BROKEN GLASS! And she certainly wouldn't make something like
that up just to keep me from moving away!
_List of salient features. Good/bad?
ObMeme: A small city. Dark in the daytime.
It's provinical and strange. This is great or grating, you decide.
It's safe. Seattle is Sesame Street compared to LA. You can walk around
aimlessly without being hassled by either the LAPD or other gangsters.
The psychology of the place may be alien. Don't think "software and garage
bands", think "aerospace/defense/The Navy/small-town" first.
Clean air, except around the big ships and city buses.
Mold, moss and mushrooms -- growing inside your house!!!
Cost of living may be better.
Time spent in traffic might not improve as much as you'd think it should
because: a) Seattle drivers do the craziest things a) the road system is
fanciful and vulnerable to the crazy things. Depending on where you live,
looking for shortcuts and alternate routes may become a part-time job. It's
trivial, really, but may annoy if you're ever in a hurry.
The touristy places can be enjoyed without irony. You will enjoy
trolling/helping the tourists. It all happens within a kind of "dream logic"
so anything is possible!
Housing might seem substandard and expensive for what you get.
Interesting displays of usonian naval and air power happen throughout the
year.
Seattle public access tv is a national treasure.
Cable tv service varies from bad to useless, but may be improving.
Have you passed the WA state bar exam already?
Picturesque stuff everywhere! Nifty hang-outs! Convenient weekend get-aways!
Canada. Victoria and Vancouver are easy to get to and worthwhile.
Do you want to live in Seattle? Yes, but in the right part of Seattle (only
you know which one is right for you) and with the proper introductions to the
right sort of people (before deciding to leave). I don't think Seattle is
really a "I'll pack up and go there" kind of place, but advance planning and
preparatory social engineering could make it a good move.
_If there's serious earth-touble, the nearby mountains will EXPLODE! and
Seattle will be buried under a mile of mud. That's a good point, though, that
you will definitely not escape earthquakes by moving to the coastal NW.
Hint: Don't buy a house near the edge of a cliff in Seattle. If it has a
view, it's probably going to fall into that view.
