Moving container with lots of subordinates
Question:
This is a fundamental question. I'd like to move some of the containers in our current tree to new locations in the same tree. This is to accomodate a change in our organizational chart. Our tree is designed as a mirror of our organizational chart. It's certainly easy to do in NWAdmin. My worry is that the container has lots of subordinate containers that have servers, printers, licenses, and lots of other stuff. Can anyone tell me what their experience has been with a change to the tree of this type? Will NDS handle it or will things melt down?
Answer:
_Container movement itself isn't handled through nwadmin, you have to use
nds manager to do this if you want to move an entire structure.
Moves of large numbers of objects will not cause NDS to melt down. I
would be inclined, however, to do a health check before and after, to
ensure that obits process properly.
_remember that moving a subtree
will change the context. If any of these containers hold users, their
context will change, you'd have to do the necessary changes to these
users Novell client or they will not be able to log in.
You may also wanna check things over. You might have other services that
have a configured context, Print Servers for instance. You have to
modify these as well or they will not function after the move.
