Gimp dies when moving guide
Question:
Does anyone recognize this as a known problem of gimp 1.2.1?
Answer:
This sounds like a serious problem. Please can you post a precise
recipe to allow me to reproduce this problem, and I'll try to fix it.
I need a sequence of exactly what you clicked on, typed etc,
along with what happened for you. An example might be:
1) start gimp
2) File>New (3000x4000 pixels, 400dpi)
=> window pops up with usual white background
3) Drag guide from top to middle
=> guide is created correctly
4) Ctrl-W => confirmation dialog pops up: answer yes
You get the idea.
You can post here or email me personally if you prefer.
I have tried to reproduce it myself on another machine using the same
version of RedHat, gimp, and gtk+, even the same kernel, although I've
also varied that without any change.
To add to the information, the machine this happens on has a Matrox G450
32 Mb Dual Head AGP video card. To review the other features, the
computer has an Asus A7A266 motherboard with an Athlon 1.4 Ghz CPU
and 512 Mb of ddr ram. I am currently running a 2.4.17 kernel, but the
problem also occurs with a stock RedHat 2.4.9 kernel.
I should also note that this particular machine has been sporadically
flaky since I got it, but I've attributed the problems to subtle
interactions between earlier 2.4 kernels and the hardware. In any
event, the flakiness exhibits itself in unexplained hanging of the entire
system, and in no other way I can detect. But the gimp does tend to
crash every now and then when I really push it with large files and
complex operations. Since this problem seems to be independent of the
image size and what else is going on in the computer, I think it is more
likely to be a gimp problem than faulty hardware.
I have the tile cache size set at 256 Mb, which is probably too large.
