Ryder Truck Rental Problems
Question:
I reserved a Ryder truck two weeks in advance; paying the extra money
for the rental, as opposed to U-Haul, since Ryder promised me it would
be there.
I reserved a truck for Thursday, taking a two-day rental, figuring on
packing the truck (with hired help) the day and evening before I left,
(since I don't like driving at night) and I figured I would start off
early on Friday. I had to be back at my old location for a few
meetings on Monday.
I am in a service industry (computer networking), trying to relocate,
and I made lots of plans, and a few appointments, for Friday
afternoon.
On Wednesday I confirmed my reservation by phone, but on Thursday the
truck didn't show up at all.
Ryder kept me waiting all day, saying it would show up in an hour or
so, but nothing. I paid the guys, (friends from college) for their
time, they were great about it, and then spent the rest of the day
breaking my Friday appointments, trying to reschedule stuff, wasting
lots of time on the phone.
When I finally got a truck on Friday, I had to pay the guys again to
load, and I ended up making a rushed trip, ended up driving at night.
Ryder didn't even offer an apology. While I only used about half a
tank of gas on my trip, about 200 miles, on Saturday morning I topped
off the tank and then drove about fifteen miles to the drop off
location. Later, on my bill, I find that Ryder claimed that the tank
was four gallons short and billed me $16 for the missing gas.
After a bunch of phone calls and email about the situation, Ryder
offered to refund me $75, what they claim the missing/late day was
worth. I told them that after they broke their contract, and cost me
all sorts of cash and trouble and inconvenience, I thought they owed
me a lot more than that. Any advice about dealing with these people?
Answer:
_The contract you signed covers them from responsibility. The truck
you rented was in the hands of another renter and they did not have
control over it being turned in late or perhaps breaking down.
If you go to www.ripoffreport.com you can see many stories such
as being left stranded for days when going cross-country as well
as losing jobs they were moving to as they were late getting there.
You could file a report on Ripoffreport and see what happens.
_If the contract has provisions of no guarantee for timing of the
truck, which it probably does....you're screwed.
Though you could possibly take them to small claims court if it
doesn't....
