Scary, white collar jobs moving overseas.

Question:

When my dad got laid off from his job (GM) I was told to go to college and get a white collar job. Now that a large portion of well paying blue collar jobs have been shifted outside we now have to worry about white collar jobs getting moved overseas. It is a new and growing trend. I do not get it companies make so much money already I get the impression they are killing the goose that lays the golden egg. No jobs = no sales.

Answer:

I agree! Who is going to buy all that overpriced junk that is made somewhere else when the best job around is fast food restaraunt? Funny you should mention this. I`m an IT worker in the UK and have been struggling to find work over the last year since being shafted up the butt by my previous employer. A year after I nearly left them to join EDS (they actually pursuaded me to stay with promise of promotion etc), they decided to pi$$ me around by telling me I had to work from a different office 80 miles away in a heavily traffic congested area (it could take 3hours to get there each morning). DUe to health reasons this wasn`t easy for me but they weren`t willing to discuss any other options so I took off not wanting to work for the comapmy any longer. I had mentioned my problem before but being an American company with American bosses the bosses didn`1t really get to hear it and probably didn`t care either if they had, depsite me helping them out a year earlier when I stayed with them instead of leaving for a better position. Anyway it wasn`t just me but lucky for some the other office was closer to their homes. The work I was doing could of easily of allwed me to work from home for 2 days a week and in the other office 3days. But the main point of this reply. I`m now set up as a contractor so that I can accept short term work but it`s hard finding this work too. Anyway, I was at an interview the other day being interviewed by someone from IBM. THe company I was at wasn`t IBM but they had a few IBM employees with them for a while. The guy mentiuoned that some time ago IBM made a load of people redundant but still had loads of work. Soon after the redundancies IBM started bringing over IT workers direclty from India. Even though they needed them at that moment they were ever prepared to wait the 6months period it takes to bring them over. Here in the UK Indian fast trackers come over to work in London doing IT jobs for £8000 (where British workers would of been on £40,000).£8k is not enough to live on anywhere let alone London. The government apparentrly letrs them work without paying tax too, as an extra incentive. Now I`m very peeed off with IT and also the UK. Partly because I`ve paid vast amounts of tax over the years.I`ve saved some money and now when I`m going through unemployed periods (not working on contracts) I can`t even get any financial help at all. I`m forced to live off of my own savings yet we allow Indians over here to work paying NO TAX and also loads of other immigrants get homes to live in and lots of benefits. Disgusting! So yes white collar jobs are being outsourced BIG TIME. I`m now considering a career change completely. Fed up with IT, fed up with the business world and management hierarchy. Healthcare next maybe for me? I graduated from India, did 4 degree course in Computer Sc & Engineering. That was 11 years ago, I was 21 when I graduated. Worked in IT for 11 years. Worked in India/UK/Australia, in US now. I used to be a contractor when I came to US, now have a permanent job. Contract job is no fun. Unless your pimp (contracting company) places you in same city, you might be moving from place to place like a gypsy. Also they dont pay you when you are between contracts and not working. (known as benchtime). I had a situation where I wasnt paid for 3 months. So I can relate with you living out of your savings....its no good. They can terminate your contract job anytime. I was working on a work visa which was sponsored by the employer. So if I quit the job, I cant start work right away with another employer. The employer will have to get a visa for me.
(INS is evry slow at issuing work visa). And when economy is bad, employers pefer folks who are citizens or green card holders. So when you are on a visa and lose your job, you might have to pack and go to home country anytime. Also even though you are a temporary worker you have to pay social security tax..which can basically be used after retirement (India is disputing that with US at WTO). I now have a permanent job. I read that 1 in 10 folks will move overseas. Worry about it when it happens, you might not be the one losing the job. Also I think when economy picks up next year there will be more IT jobs in US/UK.
