needing a portable storage
Question:
I'm so confused about storage! I need a reasonably cheap means of extra storage for my Olympus 5050 for a weeks holiday. There are loads of options being pushed at me by stores, friends etc some swear by this some by that. The main criteria are price, portability, and reliability. I prefer something with another function too to make it more useful, but can I use the following devices in the field with a direct connection to my camera or the microdrive I use?
Answer:
_I will add a new idea. Careful and relentless editing of images as you
travel greatly reduces the storage requirements.
From past experience I can suggest that most images collected on a trip,
would be better deleted long before returning home. The old joke about
being stuck watching box after box of slides of a fiends vacation and being
totally board is not just a joke and is still with us. Twenty really great
images are much better than 500 images including those twenty hidden under
80 or so images and 400 really bad ones.
I might also add that I have found that in most places it is not too
hard to find locations where you can very cheaply copy your images to CD's.
You can then even mail them back home.
_Well, I've gone around and around on this. On domestic trips with my
2020z or one of my more portable backups I carry a very small notebook
computer and that does the trick. If I'm truly worried about the laptop
dying or being stolen I then back the ones stored there onto my old and
trusty Archos 10gig jukebox.
When I go abroad I take extra cards (they are really inexpensive now),
judiciously delete photos I don't want to keep every evening AND,
depending on the kind of photo I am taking and whether I really think I
will want to do a 5x7 or 8x10 or major cropping, select something less
than optimal resolution. With two 128meg and one 64meg card I can do one
heck of a lot of photography. I suppose that were I to get close to
exhausting them I would look for a Wal-mart or equivalent and just buy
another card.
To gain added value from the cards I also use them for various file
transfer things, like moving files between my laptop and desktops, and
backing up off my laptop when on the road. I also carry around a disk
containing the drivers for my jukebox and USB card reader so I can share
photos on the road with friends and family who have computers.
_I have a USB 2.0 portable storage HD, 40Gb, runs on batteries and last a
long time, rechargeable, incorporating a CF reader, so no cables are
necessary in the field, only required when downloading from the drive to PC,
the size of a large wallet, simple commands and so far great, can be also
used as an external hard disk when connected to Pc. The site is:
