Any recommendations for local movers? (furniture, etc.)

Question:

My fiance are going to be moving in a few months and we've decided not to do this moving thing ourselves again. So, we're looking for good movers. Has anyone here on the group had experience with any local moving companies? We're just moving across town from Oak Creek to Greendale. Any recommendations? Or companies you wouldn't recommend? Any idea how much it usually costs to do a move like this? We have about 1000 sq. feet now and it's relatively full so we don't have a lot of stuff, but it is more than we want to do on our own.

Answer:

When my wife moved from Milwaukee to Madison for grad school she used Hernia Movers. She also used them when she moved back, and later when she moved in with me in New Berlin. We recommend them. I'd recomend Hernia Movers too! I used them for a small move (one bedroom apt) in the middle of December 1995 and they did a great job. They took a complete inventory of my posesions over the phone (you should write down all you can think of before calling them)and gave me a quote of $250 for the move. They ask alot of questions about what they are moving, where, how many flights of stairs etc. My move went off on time, no lost or dammaged items and cost $252. The kids (I think they were college students on xmas break) were polite and very carfull with the furniture. We moved a comparable distance last summer. Our initial concern was the safe transporation of our piano. The unanimous concensus among music stores was to hire Walsh Piano Movers. It turns out that they also handle furniture, so they likewise dealt with all of our major stuff. They nicked one chair in the process. The piano, cedar chest, curio, etc. were babied appropriately. I'd use them again.
