What to look for in movers?
Question:
This is a follow-up to my previous post. What do I look for in movers? What questions should I be asking them? What precautions should I take? Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.
Answer:
Ask for references and make a call to the Better Business Bureau. When I was moving, I looked in the Yellow Pages and found a nice display ad that said everything I wanted to hear. So, I told the elderly lady that answered the phone exactly when and where I was moving. Several days later, I decided to check them out with the Better Business Bureau - just to be safe. They had a file on them based on failure to follow up on complaints. I decided I'd better find someone else, so I called my Realtor. He referred me to a mutual friend who gave me the name of a mover he had used twice and was completely satisfied with. I called the first moving company back to tell them to cancel the move. They had no record of my order. Imagine if I hadn't checked. On the morning of the move I would have been waiting for them and no one would have shown up. I have heard a number of complaints about northAmerican, in different cities. I don't think the complaints were quite as severe, but they were there. I have also heard of them sucking in drivers as "owner/operators" then selling used trucks, etc...IOW, ripping them off. If you are moving, shop carefully.
