take the job in Sacramento . Movers & Shakers
Question:
1) Will they take my car?
2) Will they pack stuff or are we supposed to do it?
3) Should we trust them with breakable things, electronics, and personal
stuff, or should we do that ourselves even if they do pack stuff?
4) Do I need to make sure that the propane tank on the grill is empty, or
should I just leave it here and buy a new one there? Seems dangerous to
drive 35 hours with it in a truck with everything I own.
5) In moving from Indiana to California, how long can I expect my stuff to
be in transit? IOW, how many days should I pack for?
6) We'll probably send one car (if possible) and drive the other with the
cat and dog, because I'm not cool with them flying. If it isn't possible to
send one car, we'll drive out separately. Which would be more economical?
Sending one car and driving one, or driving both cars? (If the company
pays for the move, in its entirety, it won't matter, but I'm concerned that
they might not pay for cars).
7) Any other moving with movers tips?
Answer:
If you want direct house-to-house moving, without any intermediate
loading/unloading, you will need to arrange for that in advance, and be ready
to accept delivery when it gets there. The in-transit time will be the time
required for the truck to cover the distance while driving straight through (24
hr/day) on the fastest route. Indiana to Sacramento, probably under 36 hours.
Once the truck gets there, it will be unloaded immediately, whether that is at
the new residence or at a warehouse.
You'd have to ask BJ's new company. Some companies spring for the
packing service. If they, do, here is what will happen. A day before the movers
arrive, a team arrives with a van full of boxes, packing tape, newsprint, and
markers. They will pack everything in their path with very little regard for
sorting. Their goal is speed. They are very efficient and will pack your
garbage. They will be everywhere in your house at once. I recommend pulling
things together before they come, if you want to unpack these items together.
Have your clothes and things for the move packed before they come! In
fact, put your suitcases somewhere and label them clearly, or they will get
packed too.
Most moving companies will work with you to get your stuff to you when you
need it. Are you going to have somewhere to live immediately, or are you going
to have to live in a hotel while you look? Most moving companies have storage
facilities, but they will unload and reload your stuff into their warehouse to
get the use of their trucks back while you are waiting for your items! That is
when the damage happens. I would pack for two weeks to have enough flexibility.
Don't accept the unpacking service, even if it's paid for!! Sure, they
remove the trash, but "unpacking" just means that they cover the nearest
horizontal surface (ie the floor) with all of your belongings! It's much easier
to sort out yourself.
If you color coordinate the boxes in your old house after the packers
leave (just tape a piece of construction paper on each box - green for the
kitchen, blue for the bathroom, etc), then when you get to your new house, tape
a piece of the same paper on each room's doorway, the unloading will proceed
smoothly.
This is true, but also negotiable. If the company in Sacramento wants BJ as
badly as they seem to, he might be able to negotiate the full moving cost,
as well as temporary housing till you find a more permanent place, also your
transit costs while you are driving cross country.
They offered that from the beginning... I'm not sure about "full moving
cost", but they will pay for 30 days temporary housing, and they will pay to
either fly us out there or for us to drive and stay in hotels. They're
paying for the moving, too, but we don't know, yet, whether it will be full
costs, packing and hauling, packing hauling and unpacking, if it's up to us,
or what...
You are going to be very surprised when you get there. Huge cargo
ships can steam all the way from the Golden Gate to the port of
Sacramento. The Sacramento delta has something like 1000 waterways.

You also have Folsom lake just down the road.

Lake Tahoe is one of the most beautiful places in the world, and even
has casino gambling, but there are many, many other great destinations
that are closer, and do not require you to risk your life on highway
50. You could live in Sacramento for 50 years and not have time to
visit all the wonderful destinations within a 2 hour driving radius!
I have things trucked from far away places like Indiana all the time
and it often arrives in 2-3 days. Moving cargo is their business, and
the faster they move it, the move cargo they can move. These people do
not goof around. I don't have any experience with the personal moving
companies, just the truckers, but I assume it is the same.
Enjoy your new life in Sacramento! I am sure you will love it.
