Locate a moving company...be it residential or commercial.
Question:
Locate a moving company...be it residential or commercial. .Think about that story?
Answer:
That should have been your first indication that they weren't trustworthy.
If a company won't be honest with you about the time they plan to arrive,
they aren't going to be straightforward with you about much of anything.
I worked for moving companies in southern California and learned quickly
that it is a rotten business to be in. Even if you're a good company, it's
difficult for the consumer to believe it, because so many bad movers have
ruined it for the good ones. I had the misfortune of working for a bad one,
and after a year of that, I got a job with a reputable mover who ended up
moving us 3 times.
When the movers finished packing your items on their truck they should have
given you a complete inventory of all your furniture and boxes that they
loaded on the truck. Each item should have had a sticker on it with a
number identifying it on the inventory. When you sign this inventory you
are agreeing that everything on that inventory is on that truck. When they
unload the truck at the destination the mover will have you sign another
copy of that inventory, stating that you have received everything that was
loaded onto the truck at the other end. If you signed that you received all
the items, you're pretty much out of luck. It's unfortunate that you had a
bad move, but many times the customer has much more control than they know.
Had you told the movers that you weren't going to give them one more dime
than the amount you agreed, and ordered them to unload the truck, trust me,
they would have changed their minds about holding your stuff ransom like
that. The moving company doesn't want to have to pay those loaders to load
and unload that truck without moving your stuff.
It's difficult to find good help in the moving business. They are usually
paid only a little over minimum wage. Would you want to move other peoples
nice furnishings up and down stairs and get paid $7.00 or $8.00 an hour?
Most people wouldn't. Many people don't know this, but most men who work
for moving companies are criminals. Most of them are petty thieves who are
in and out of jails all the time. They can always find a job as a mover
when they get out, because there's a constant turnover of them. In the
local moving business, many movers are casing the homes after they move
people into them in order to steal from them later. Afterall, who knows
better what kinda goodies you've got, than the guy that moved them in for
ya!
I don't work in the moving business anymore, and I probably never will,
because I doubt I'll ever find another honest one.
