Relocating-Moving Services

Question:

I provide moving-relocation services to the domestic and international market. Please send me message if you require moving services. Thank you for your consideration.

Answer:

Under 5.5x, you can go into "Manage Service". There is a VCopy utility that lets you copy a file service, including all the ARL's, from one service to another. This lets you easily move, services from one drive to another - or one server to another. As for being better, I think it depends on what your moving and from where to where. From one server to another server it seems kind of slow for a file service over 150MB. From one drive to another, its all I would use. I agree that VCopy is quite useful, but there is a major caveat to look out for. If the ARL's contain a reference to the file service as the owner then the receiving service will also reflect that owner value. In our day-to-day use that is nothing to be concerned about - the owner makes no difference to user access rights. The implication however, is that other "universal values" such as Admin Lists have to be manually modified at the receiving end. My situation, and I am reasonably certain others on the BANYAN-L as well, requires that I have unique ARL's on the majority of my *user* dirs.
(Fortunately, all shared software/files/etc can have identical ARL's.) This means that I must edit every directory entry at the ROOT level at a minimum. If I assume that all subordinate directories have the same ARL as the ROOT- level parent, then I can use the "Copy an ARL..." option to simplify matters. The moral of the story is that VCopy is very useful and I do recommend it. File services containing directories with specific security requirements will cause extra work, but the ease of transfer of the files and original ARL's makes it worthwhile to use.
