Moving soon and i need to rent a moving van.
Question:
i will be moving soon and i need to rent a moving van. too many horror stories about uhaul (search for coyote osborne on the web), and others don't really seem much better. are there any pretty nice companies that rent new trucks and vans? i think a cargo van would actually suffice but i need it for one way from san francisco to los angeles. Am i going to be stuck choosing between uhaul and ryder?
Answer:
I had no real problems renting Ryder other than a very small leak in one
corner of the truck. Lost a bag of flour. I _do_ hate the governor that keeps
the speed at 65 MPH, though.
I had brake problems on a Ryder truck two days in a row. I ended up
getting towed off the highway the second time courtesy 911 - I hung up
on Ryder's "someone will be with you shortly" message after an hour on
my cell phone. Spent the whole day at a truck garage. Ryder finally
gave me another truck, but a two hour drive took two days, three extra
hotels, and I ran out of drugs for my two cats.
It doesn't matter what it says on the side of the truck - rental
trucks are not maintained.
I would say Ryder, Penske, or Budget. I wouldn't rent any crap from
U-Haul for anything more than a move within the same zip code. Not
basing that on anyone else's problems - I have never got a truck from
U-Haul that was worth a damn.
I haven't rented anything in about a year, but for a while I was renting
something about once a month for various business needs. Actually found
*Budget* to be a reliable rental. I have used their 15 footers several
times. Ran an SF-Seattle round trip in one and was quite satisifed.
For that size truck, it got the best fuel mileage (diesel) of any I have
ever rented.
Ryder is generally only a little more expensive than U-Haul by the time
you are done paying for everything - but I trust Ryder equipment more.
I used Penske for to move a relative from California to Utah. Had to
make an extra 200 mile side trip on that move - Penske gives unlimited
mileage on one-way rentals (at least they did 18 months ago).
