Frugal Moving?
Question:
This is do-it-yourself moving and I think the cost is insane. Has anyone else moved recently (cross-country) who had better deals with other companies? Any creative ideas that cost less?
Answer:
-I was going to mention something similar but decided it was too much
of a crap shoot.
$1900 is not all that out of line, IMO. It converts to about $1,000
ten years ago. Thank our "minimal inflation" for the difference.
Allow about 15 cents per mile for gas on top of that.
The frugal thing to do when moving is to ditch all the junk, sell the
stuff where a profit can be made, and gift those relatives who gave
you the ladies leg table lamp and family heirlooms.
Haunt the thrift shops at the new location for new junk.
-Call UHaul and say Ryder gave me a $1863 price can you beat that? then with
the new price call Uhaul and say we have a ? price can you beat it?
We saved a few hundred that way on our last move and got a dolly rental
thrown in at no extra cost.
-Put it in prespective: You are moving your whole household
across country. This is stuff that means a lot to you. Is
$2000 too much to be able to keep it with you?
BTW, have heard disturbing things about UHaul's customer
service. You might want to get some iron-clad assurances
about having the van you want, when you want, where you
want, before you agree to use their service.
