slip and fall from Ryder truck..do i have grounds for legal action?

Question:

It was brought to my attention by a state trooper in Kansas that the inspection sticker on the Ryder truck was expired. The truck was due for its yearly inspection a month before it was rented to me...i drove it almost 1700 miles from Illinois to Scottsdale Arizona. Were any of my rights violated by this? Should i expect compensation from Ryder for the amount of the rental? Who regulates these inspections...the truck was registered in Florida.

Answer:

You need to figure out what your damages are, that is, exactly what you want from them. I wouldn't think first about a court case, probably the trunk rental company will be willing to make it good without going through that (if not, then of course it may be a matter of going to court, but resolving it without that is better). It might be good to have a lawyer help you with this. In particular, I really don't know what to do about measuring damages in a case like this, where you don't know how long the health effects will last.
-Take you a story : Woman walks into convenience store in Boise this afternoon. Pulls small caliber revolver from purse and empties the till. Jumps into a Ryder Moving Truck with two guys and they speed away onto the connector to the Interstate....and head for the sunset.... Boise's finest pursue them at speeds up to ninety miles per hour.... but they don't stop....and the truck is too big (to say nothing of amazingly fast) to force off the road with a squad car. Finally, up the road, spikes are placed across the road....and the truck's tires are flattened. And the culprits are apprehended with no incidents or gunplay. Gee, I can imagine trying it in broad daylight in a Porsche or Ferrari, but a Ryder rental truck?
