Chicago to San Francisco in a U-Haul
Question:
The U-Haul contract doesn't give us a lot of extra mileage over the straight route out there, but we were thinking about stopping at Mt. Rushmore, the Badlands, Black Hills, and Devil's Tower. How about the Medicine Wheel in North-Central Wyoming? Is this crazy? Is driving a U-Haul such a pain that we'll probably just want to get to California as fast as we possibly can? Or are there other sights along the route that are worth checking out (not Reno)?
Answer:
About a dozen years ago I did what you are about to do. After a full day
or so I ended just "wanting to get there", maybe I've got a low tolerence
for driving in large uncomfortable vehicles ;
Once you get here and park the U-Haul, you may want to check out the Napa
Valley. We have a web site that lists events for the next year as well
as indepth info on wineries, some lodging, outdoor activities, free
brochures etc.
1. Is it reasonable to believe that if someone is going to drive as far
as these folks, that they might want to know about an opportunity to see
some of the world renown California wine country.... Yes it is.
2. If they can check out this possibility with a few clicks of a mouse
they can be better informed about the options they have and may want to
(I know this will come as a shock to you) change their plans to visit
this place.
3. No harm no foul..... If I were suggesting they visit Florida, I
would be in violation of among other things, common sense. In this case
I'm not.
