Has anyone experience U-Haul?
Question:
I have learned one thing in my life. No matter what the consumers do, the
scammers will find a way to rob the money from them.
I rented a truck from U-Haul on June 29th. The rent was 29.95+$.49/km. When
I got the truck the gas tank was 1/4 full. I drove the truck for 45km, how
much gas you think it could consume? I had to fill about 13 litres to bring
the gas tank to the level of 1/4 full. I dropped the truck at their location
in the evening as they had suggested.
Later on when I check my credit card bill, I found out they had deducted an
extra $57 for gas from my $200 deposit; $20 service charge + $1 per litre,
that means 37 litres. This means the quarter of tank takes about 50 litres
or more than 1litre to drive 1km.
Anyway, I called them over the phone and the guy put me on hold for about
1/2 hour. I left the phone off hook and immediately went to their location
at 401/warden. My phone was still on hold when I reached there. The people
over there were totally rude and lacking any kind of customer service. They
argued with me and literally laughed at me. They advised me to come back on
next working day, Monday, and talk to their manager. During all this hour
long argumentation, my phone was still on hold and WAS on hold up until I
reached back home....amazing, isn't it?
So, I went back there on Tuesday and talk to a man who said he was
"manager's boss". Although he was little bit polite but he too refused to
accept their mistake of charging my for 37 litres. He said I could go
whereever I wanted and complain. He wouldn't care and wont refund the
fraudulant charge.
I think most people won't even notice the extra charge as long as they see
some refund in their credit card statements since these people wont send you
details of charges. Scammers like this manage to get away and make an extra
profit and send it to their bosses in the south side.
Does anyone has similar experience?
Answer:
I did not have a billing problem with a U-Haul rental but here's my
experience:
Back in the spring when I moved, I rented a truck from U-Haul's north
Richmond HIll location, an auto mechanic shop. It was mid to late in
the month. Since I didn't have too far to go, I figured U-Haul's
pricing structure was better for me - low fee + higher than average km
charge.
I drove the 14' truck a short distance, about 0.8 km, to my old place.
Since I was not familiar with the road handling characteristics of the
truck (I drive a VW Golf) I drove it nice and slow and had attention
focused on nothing but the road. Planning a total of 3 loads, I put
the first in and started to drive to the new place. The truck was 1/2
full. More familiar with the truck handling, I noticed the truck was
constantly pulling to the right so I had to compenstate by keeping the
steering wheel to the left about 30 degrees counterclockwise.
Furthermore, the truck would jerk left or right constantly so that I
had to be very careful and keep adjusting the steering even at low low
speeds. Needless to say, I drove extremely slow, about 20 kmh. You
know something was wrong when the schoold bus decided to pass you!
The slow rate totally mucked up my schedule which had to be
coordinated with my job. I was able to complete only 1 of the 3
planned trips and later in the month, Having no other opporutnity to
move on my own before my last month ran out (busy at work with a
deadline), I hired a mover at further expense. In other words, the
uhaul rental was a waste - these guys could have done everying for a
flat rate, not just the one I did at great peril. I asked 2 others,
a co worker and a cleaner at my office, to evaluate the steering of
this truck before I returned it. Without prompts from me, both agreed
there was excessive play on the steering wheel and it slipped to the
right. This truck, with Arizona plates, just felt unstable and
unsafe. When I returned the truck I told the dealer about the problem
but held off any angry response until I got to the customer feedback
form on uhaul.com. I completed the transaction at the dealer (ie. I
fully paid) and left to go use the internet. A few days later, their
customer service called me to get more details. A few days after
that, someone else from there left a message saying they will give me
a $20 coupon for my next uhaul rental. Ahahahaha! No, it isn't worth
risking your life. and since I willl ensure noone in my cirlce is
going to renting from uhaul. That coupon is worth as much crap as was
that truck. What they should have done in the first place was to just
simply maintain their trucks in safe condition. This erperience is in
contrast with a rental from Ryder a few years back. That cargo van
felt sturdy and safe.
I rented a u-haul last december and used it for a quick trip to storage and back
to the u-haul depot. The gas hand was on 3/4 when i took it and it hadn't moved
when i got back. The guy there told me to take it to the esso pumps on the same
lot to get filled. Not thinking clearly that's waht i did. They charged me $38
bucks. Lucky for me I said I'm not paying to the gas bar attendent and he had to
take it up with the u-haul people. They hadn't realized that the tank was only
3/4 full because usually they said it's filled before a costumer leaves the
parking lot with it.They knew the km I drove and knew there was no way I burned
that much gas inthat distance. We cut a deal and I paid $13. Still a little too
unorganized and rude for me.
