Trying to find rental truck to haul boat
Question:
I am buying a boat in Florida and rather than have someone haul it all the way up to NJ, I would like to rent a 3/4 ton and pull it myself. U-Haul, Penske and Ryder don't allow this. Does anyone know of a company that I can contact that will allow a one way rental?
Answer:
For what a 1 way truck rental would cost, you could probably buy a used truck in florida and sell it in NJ cheaper. No rust, all that. You will probably have to pay someone to haul it for you, if you can't find a truck. Alternately, considering the miles, you might find an older used truck for sale in your area, buy it, then sell it after the trip is over (or maybe rent it from the seller). Enterprise had full size vans in FL. You could run it over to U Haul, have them install a hitch for $100.00, trailer it home and sell the hitch. You'll need to rent a bigger truck but check with Penske, Ryder, U-Haul, etc. I'm fairly sure I've seen people towing with their moving trucks. You might even be able to find someone needing a northbound move that would pay for the trip. At one time I tried to rent a Car trailer to haul a car on. No one would rent one because of the extra load. They did rent me a van truck with a car-hauler trailer for a one way trip from Pennsylvania to Michigan. I believe it was Hertz. Why don't you advertise at the local colleges for spring break and pay the kid a couple of bucks to tow it back. Or just contact the local trucking co. to see if they have a load going to NJ. from FL. and pick it up at the terminal. Or you could just rent a suv from budget. U=haul rents 1 ton vans. So does budget. Put a hitch on it drive to NJ. with the boat and have a collage kid drive it back for spring break. Or Home depot rents 1 ton trucks by the hour or day. Or you could advertise in Fl for someone driving to NY and have them drop it off. No matter how you look at it do you really want to trust some Yahoo with your new boat or money. let alone the one way expense. If was my boat I would grab a buddy and have a spontaneous ROAD TRIP like in the movie Animal House. About 12 years ago, I assisted a friend in moving from Michigan to Jacksonville, FL. He had a 22 ft. boat and he rented a 14 ft. truck from U-Haul for household goods and to tow the boat. U-Haul even mounted an adaptor ball-hitch to match the trailers hitch. I have another friend that has a U-Haul franchise and I could ask about it, if you like.
