Anyone used U-Haul before?

Question:

Anyone used U-Haul before? Just wondering how much they cost, I've really never moved more than 30 miles before, so the idea of renting a trailer is new and exciting. At the trucks you drive a better deal or are the hitches good for the price? Or should I just get a mule and a cart?

Answer:

How much stuff do you have to move? The first time I moved a long distance I looked at getting a U-Haul and found it was cheaper for me to rent a van from Budget. I didn't have much stuff, so this was an option. You may have too much stuff to fit into a van. The best thing about renting a van was playing loud "arena rawk" and pretending to be headbangers on our way to see some big nameless stadium band. We didn't have any airbrushed unicorns on the side of the van though. Our mood was dampened by this. And get the insurance too...A lot of insurance company's don't cover their supposed "insured" driver's while driving these moving van things. I was fortunate enough to have thought ahead, for once, before I sideswiped my rented Ryder into a Nissan Altima in a Circuit City parking lot, tearing the Altima's fender off and totally remodeling the driver's side of this poor slob's car. I paid like $140 to move across town. Not bad for a 14 foot van rental and destroying someone's near-new vehicle. Unless you're driving a car that's designed for towing, I wouldn't recommend just slapping a hitch on. You could seriously damage a lot of things, most notably your transmission. If you're renting a car, DO NOT tell them that you'll be towing a trailer, and absolutely do not rent the car from the same place you rent the trailer and hitch. They'll either charge you extra for the "towing package", or refuse to rent to you at all.
